K2 ski reviews
2010 ski reviews coming in September. These reviews are of new and updated 08/09 models. More detailed reviews of many more models, current and past, are now available on the subscription site.
Sabre![]()
Lacking in true high performance, but forgiving and easy to ski on the groomed. Good for casual skiers and those buying a first pair without expectation of rapid improvement. The question for these skiers is whether it makes sense to buy rather than demo on occasional trips.
Burnin' Luv![]()
Upgraded; the most significant change is a wider footprint. Highly versatile, not only in terms of terrain, conditions and speed, but also in skill level and technical style. This is a great teaching and learning ski and is a superb one-ski-quiver for frontside oriented good female skiers. Likely to be one of K2's top female-specific models.
Sidewinder![]()
Solid choice for recreational skiers who are beginning to explore the whole mountain, but who still spend much of the time on the groomed. Definite speed limit; not for aggressive or strong/heavier skiers. Very forgiving and relaxing. Plan for upgrade after a season or two, especially if taking lessons.
Outlaw![]()
One of K2's most popular models receives a major makeover. The Outlaw has become more versatile and higher performing, especially in the technical realm. Great at speed, solid in broken and chunky snow, surprisingly nimble on harder snow and great on the backside. Be strong and ski strong. This is an imposing and rewarding big mountain gun.
Xplorer![]()
The new Xplorer, described by one tester as a "quick turning Recon," and another as "Outlaw lite,"is a good one-ski-quiver for those who do ski the groomed, but who are also committed to off-piste adventure. Well balanced, although not an ideal learning ski.
Extreme![]()
K2 seems determined to remain the key player in backside riding that they have been for several years. The introduction of the Extreme, as crossover as a twin as one can find, seems certain to bolster that effort. Moreover, the ski is as home in the pipe and park as it is in the outback. Add its surprising groomer capability and this may be the most versatile ski made by K2. Think of it as the "Teton Gravity fans' delight."
