Völkl "30-Second" ski reviews
These reviews are of new and updated 08/09 models. More detailed reviews of many more models, current and past, are now available on the subscription site.
Tigershark 12 Foot SW
The majority of our testers found the new, now 3-position switch version of the 12 Foot a good ski with an exceptionally wide performance envelope. Several did raise the notion of overkill. One of the 12's biggest fans, at least among our crew, offered the observation that the middle switch does not make a huge difference. The soft and firm settings have definite effect; the middle position produces a flex that is slightly softer than the Power setting. Nevertheless, the 12 Foot remains a hit with Volkl fans.
Tigershark 8 Foot
The newest member of the school of Tigersharks, this "bargain" model was described by one of our skiers as a "low effort, high performance ski." Not for heavy, extremely fast or aggressive skiers, the 8 is still a solid choice for strong sport skiers, skiers who are improving technical skills and for those, like instructors, who need a high degree of versatility primarily focused on the groomed. Close in feel to the 4 and 5 stars of a couple seasons ago.
AC 30
Versatile 1-ski-quiver for all mountain skiers who spend at least half the time on the groomed. Capable in almost any situation. Quick, smooth, energetic, at home in the fall line. The 30 has a wide range of uses and is suitable to a wide range of skiing styles. Switch option not available.
Attiva Sol
Somewhat toned down female-specific analog to the AC 30 and as well received. Excellent 1-ski-quiver for all but the most aggressive of freeriders and speed seekers. Good learning tool, good in crud, chop and medium off-piste powder; versatile teaching ski.
AC 50
A solid hit for Völkl. This slightly wider replacement for the AC 40 was enthusiastically received by our test skiers. It does it all, even at 85mm. Good carver, smooth, stable yet quick, another excellent 1-ski quiver for the outward bound who have to get there from inbound. Overall performance is especially well balanced.
Attiva Aurora
Female-specific version of AC 50 and our female skiers praised it even more than did their male counterparts the 50. Western skiers especially will find the Aurora a superb 1-ski-quiver.
